This week (Sept. 13-19) is National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW)! Established in 1988, this annual event is designed to recognize and thank professional truck drivers for their hard work and dedication in performing one of our economy’s most important and challenging jobs.
Professional drivers haul approximately 11 billion tons of freight annually, which is more than 70% of total U.S. freight tonnage. Practically every aspect of our lives is impacted by the work of these drivers.
For example, more than 80% of U.S. communities depend solely on trucking for the delivery of their goods and commodities. Can you imagine what our lives would be like if groceries, medicine—or petroleum products like gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, propane or lubricants—were not readily available? Fortunately, thanks to America’s 3.6 million truck drivers, who deliver to communities from coast to coast, we don’t have to.
This year’s NTDAW theme is: “For the Miles You Drive and the Sacrifices You Make”—a reminder of the essential work that truckers do as they crisscross the country making pickups and deliveries that keep our economy moving forward.
