Next week, and throughout the month of June, Woodford Oil Co. and Woodford Transport will be joining hundreds of other companies across the country in recognizing National Safety Month.
Launched by the National Safety Council in 1996, National Safety Month is now in its 30th year of bringing extra attention to important safety issues from the workplace, to home, to everywhere in between.
Each week of National Safety Month focuses on a different safety-related topic:
- JUNE 1-6: Moving Safety Forward: Advancing a culture of safety with forward-thinking strategies and tools.
- JUNE 7-13: Staying Safe on the Roads: Helping reduce crashes with practical guidance for drivers, pedestrians and fleets.
- JUNE 14-20: Promoting Holistic Worker Health: Supporting total worker wellbeing with insights on mental, physical and emotional health.
- JUNE 21-30: Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls: Reducing common workplace and home hazards with targeted prevention resources.
Preventable injuries are a leading cause of death in the United States, and during Safety Month, Woodford will be sharing and promoting important safety-related information with employees, customers, and partners.
We also encourage you to visit the National Safety Month website to learn about all aspects of safety. A wide variety of resources is available there, including toolkits, articles, videos, and online training programs for both individuals and companies.
Woodford Is A Safety-First Organization
At Woodford Oil and Woodford Transport, we take safety very seriously across all of our operations. We firmly believe that no aspect of business is more important than ensuring the safety of our employees, customers, and the local communities where we operate.
We also understand that the transportation, handling, and management of fuels, lubricants, propane, and other petroleum products and chemicals presents unique challenges.
To meet those challenges, and to operate in a way that exceeds the expectations of our employees, customers, communities, and regulators, we have embraced a Safety-First Philosophy. That means that safety is everyone’s responsibility—from management, to dispatchers, drivers, and customer service representatives.
For example, one of the most powerful elements of our Safety-First Philosophy is our Stop Work Authority (SWA) program. This empowers any employee, regardless of their position, to halt operations if they observe an unsafe job or project situation.
The SWA program is not just symbolic. It is an effective tool for preventing accidents before they occur, and emphasizes our belief that safety is the responsibility of every employee, at all levels across the organization.
Training, Training, Training
Continuous employee training underpins our approach to safety. Woodford’s Safety Committee—made up of key managers and staff—is responsible for developing and implementing ongoing safety training for all employees. That includes regularly scheduled field and classroom sessions on a broad spectrum of topics relevant to our company and industry, including:
- Roadway Safety (defensive driving, distracted driving, fatigue awareness)
- Pre-Trip Inspection Protocols & Equipment Safety
- Fire & Emergency Preparedness
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Awareness
- Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Awareness and Security
- Fuel Handling Safety and Spill Prevention
- Hazard Communication (HazCom)
- Regulatory Compliance (DOT, EPA, OSHA, etc.)
- Heat Stress & Summer Safety (hydration, heat exhaustion)
- Employee Wellbeing & Fatigue Management
The Safety Committee also is involved with bringing in professionals from the insurance and risk management industries to discuss important safety topics and provide insight on trends in safety and responsibility in the workplace.
Our safety training is compliant with all federal, state and local regulations, including those of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) requirements for general industry.
Business Expansion Brings Safety Training to New Offices
In recent years, Woodford has expanded its operations into new geographies, including Moorefield, Reedsville, Snowshoe, Summersville, and Webster Springs, WV.
Woodford now has 10 regional offices providing fuels, lubricants, propane, and other products and services to residential, commercial, industrial, and agriculture customers in a service area that extends across central West Virginia and the Tri-State area of northern West Virginia, southern Pennsylvania, and western Maryland.
At each expansion location, Woodford has brought its Safety-First Philosophy, and initiated training for new and existing employees. We also introduced our Stop Work Authority program, and our company-wide safety recognition and incentive program for drivers. This approach has helped to both standardize and enhance safety at each of our new offices.
Through continuous employee training, and the consistent application of our Safety-First Philosophy, Woodford actively promotes a work environment that contributes to the positive attitudes and safe practices of all employees.
We believe that this approach translates into superior performance for our customers. And that means safety is not just good policy, it’s good business. Learn more about our Core Safety Values.
