Bulk DEF vs. Jugs: How to Choose the Right DEF Supply for Your Fleet

Bulk DEF vs. jugs guide from Woodford Oil, showing a Woodford delivery truck

Every diesel truck and machine built for current emissions standards needs diesel exhaust fluid, and running out is not an option. The question for most fleet managers is not whether to buy DEF but how. Jugs from the store are simple. Bulk delivery costs less per gallon. This guide walks through the choices so you can match your DEF supply to the way your fleet actually works.

How much DEF does a fleet use?

A useful rule of thumb is that a diesel engine uses roughly 2 to 3 gallons of DEF for every 100 gallons of diesel. A single pickup may need only a few gallons a month. A fleet of heavy trucks or a busy job site can go through hundreds. That difference is what decides which format makes sense.

Your DEF supply options

Jugs and small containers

The 2.5-gallon jug is the most familiar way to buy DEF. It works well for owner-operators, farm equipment and small fleets that only need an occasional top-off. The downsides show up as volume grows: the cost per gallon is the highest of any format, someone has to carry and pour every jug, and the empty plastic piles up fast.

Bulk DEF delivery

With bulk delivery, DEF is pumped from our truck into a storage tank at your yard or shop, and your drivers fill up from a dispenser just as they do with fuel. You pay less per gallon, nobody handles jugs, and a closed tank and pump keep the fluid clean. For most fleets with steady usage, bulk is the lowest-cost and lowest-effort way to buy DEF.

DEF at the pump

Drivers who are away from the yard can fill their DEF tank at the fuel island. Several Woodford Express stations offer DEF at the pump at competitive prices.

Jugs vs. bulk at a glance

Jugs Bulk delivery
Best for One or two vehicles, occasional use Fleets, farms and sites with steady use
Cost per gallon Highest Lowest
Labor Carry, pour and dispose of each container Fill from a dispenser
Contamination risk Higher, with open funnels and reused containers Lower, with a closed tank and dedicated pump
Storage needed Shelf space out of the sun On-site tank, which Woodford can provide

When does it make sense to switch to bulk?

Consider bulk DEF if any of these sound familiar:

  • You buy DEF by the pallet or make regular store runs for it
  • Drivers lose time pouring jugs or have been caught short on the road
  • You already take bulk fuel or lubricant deliveries at your location
  • You have had an SCR fault traced to dirty or diluted DEF

No storage tank? Woodford can supply on-site DEF storage and set up scheduled deliveries so the tank never runs dry.

Storage tips for any format

  • Store DEF out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Kept sealed at moderate temperatures, it typically lasts about a year.
  • DEF freezes at about 12°F. Freezing does not harm it, and it is ready to use once thawed.
  • Use only equipment made for DEF. Small amounts of fuel, oil or tap water can damage an SCR system.
  • Buy DEF that meets ISO 22241 and carries API certification.
